This project is awesome. I love me some tetris, and most of the time I am content with playing the NES version. But it doesn’t have the QOL features tetris’ new entries have added over the years. I play on my phone, so I could download the official Tetris app, but it is sadly infested with ads and microtransactions and I’m not withstanding all that to clear some lines on the go. Enter Apotris, a tetris “clone” with all the niceties of modern tetris, and fully open source! It has features like block preview, hold mechanic, extendable list of queued blocks, and a variety of skins so you choose the one you feel sits right with you! Not only that, the gameplay is buttery smooth and I love how they added a little rumble animation that is pretty satisfying to see. I use the gba version with an emulator, but it is also supported across multiple platforms. It really comes off a game made with lots of care and love put into it. So, if you ever get the itch to play some tetris, give Apotris try!

This is probably my favorite Tetris clone. I just loaded up my new GBA emulator with a ton of stuff to play and I go right back to it…

Yeah I was wondering that too. Their source code page (https://gitea.com/akouzoukos/apotris) does list instructions on building for Android yet they do not publish an Android build there or on F-Droid. Maybe it’s still a work-in-progress, unclear if their source will actually compile a playable Android game but someone could give it a shot & let us know how it goes :D

I also wonder if the controls would work right on an Android device without keyboard/mouse/controller.

In the meantime Block Drop is a decent open source Tetris clone on Android, also on F-Droid (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.blockdrop.game/)… this one is more old school simple Tetris action, Apotris looks like it’s aiming for newer style Tetris.

Now that you’ve tried both, how do the touch controls compare with the GBA version in an emulator? Any easier to avoid accidental drops when it speeds up?

Yes, It’s actually very fleshed out. For starters, the cross doesn’t have diagonals so you’re less likely to mess up your placement. And then you can actually move around and resize the buttons to your liking on the settings. Here’s a screenshot of how my controls look now:
