So true! If we didn’t have cycling advocates, we’d definitely have at least 100x more bike infrastructure by now. It’s pretty common that major infrastructure projects get done without advocacy.

When “vehicular cycling advocates” go to city council meetings and advocate against bike infrastructure, they are enemies that we oppose. When they take the whole lane going 15 in a 35 on a stroad built for cars going 50, they are important members of our coalition reminding drivers that they are obligated to use the road in a manner that is safe for the many communities that are entitled to use the road. But you should be extremely skeptical of car advocates who tell you that if there were fewer bike advocates, or if bike advocacy were more convenient to drivers, there would be better bike infrastructure, even if those car advocates have bought a bicycle or learned some words about bicycles – the problem is not that the existing bike advocates aren’t advocating correctly.
