He posted the update on reddit, but also uploaded the demonstration video to his YouTube account.

Cool project, but nostalgic form-factor aside, I feel like going with a 4:3 screen was a questionable choice. A lot of games either won’t run or will run with letterboxing, further reducing your usable resolution.

To be fair it is pretty chunky. If you think about it for a minute, we’ve had x86 laptops (portable, very thin) and very small desktop computers (NUC for example) for decades. So I don’t think the x86 architecture has anything to do with it.

I’ve seen countless YouTube videos making similar projects with a Wii or something, and it’s just as unbelievable.

      Mad props to this maker!

      Whine? Maybe even Fex?

You can play windows x86 games on the Arm chip that is in the steam Frame (running Linux). So there are conversions available, but generally you lose like 10-15% performance if it runs.

This is not ARM, this is x86 processor ripped out of the Steam Deck. I know we can emulate x86 even on smartphones. So small form factor is possible this way. But having a full fledged x86 PC processor in a small form factor almost the size of original Game Boy is pretty impressive. Given what it is capable of playing.

Ow cool, didn’t realised they used an actual x86 chip. Quite impressive for an diy form factor

But those Zimaboards doesn’t have a screen, battery and controls and are not powerful enough to play Expedition 33 on Steam. If they do, then can you provide a link; I couldn’t find one. As for the performance I found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcxIwglW_x0 which shows Counter Strike playing very choppy.

They don’t, but having one to hold in my hand, I can tell you that they are the same thickness as a gameboy but half as wide. Plenty of room for a battery and screen if you were to repack one into something as big as the original gameboy.

And are they powerful enough to play at the same level of Steam Deck, such as Expedition 33? It even has a trackpad. It’s easy to say “oh they could have done this”, but nobody else did other than this guy. With another battery, stronger CPU and such you have less room for active cooling in it.

I’ve been playing around with Droid-Deck on my android phone this week and it’s surprisingly good.

I don’t have the space to install really large games, so I’ve tested recent indie/AA games and older games like Crysis Remastered and they all just worked. Even the desktop experience and flatpak installer was quick and painless.

I already have a Steam Deck and don’t really need to use this, but it’s pretty awesome easily running games or Linux apps on the phone. Obviously YMMV, but I’ve been genuinely surprised by it so far

Very cool. I couldn’t personally play on a screen that size but to each their own.
