  • Everyday browsing (except watching videos online which is indeed very slow) is almost seamless on my 16-year-old Thinkpad running NetBSD, even with its meager 4GB RAM. NetBSD in general is pretty chill on system resources.

FreeBSD and DragonFly are not quite there, at least in my experience.

I haven’t used OpenBSD for browsing or watching videos in AGES (I only use it for non-graphical applications), so I wouldn’t know.

  • Artificial Stupidity.

9front is not UNIX (but its predecessor was also created at Bell Labs). It is ‘many of the ideas surrounding UNIX, on steroids’. The user experience is waaaaaay more integrated because the whole system is developed by the same small team.

On the flip side: forget about browsers and many ‘modern’ programming languages.

  • Yea, apparently AS is now being heavily used in its development. I need to look up the reference, but I read a while ago that AS-assisted ‘coding’ was used for making SMP work in Hurd.

I’ve spent quite some time pondering my options now that OpenBSD, my former OS of choice, has been slowly but surely giving in to the hype, and I can tell you that currently the most sensible option seems to be (I’m not joking) 9Front.
