I was under the assumption that OP didn’t even boot into the installer yet. I don’t think the HDD is the issue here. I don’t think the HDD or the filesystem it contains would matter anyway. This has just been my experience installing Linux on an x86 Mac. You have to try a few things to get it to work. I recall Peppermint OS (Back when it was Ubuntu based) failing to install everytime but Zorin OS Lite working just fine.

I recall trying to install Linux on a 2007 Macbook and several distros not working. I guess try a different distro. I don’t know why some work and some don’t but I’m just gonna blame Apple. Try Fedora or endeavourOS. I even found this script to install Elementary’s Pantheon DE on Arch Linux.

Edit: Also Debian might be worth a try.

Yes, I did that and followed the instructions and it still failed. I’ll try it again tomorrow and update.

CachyOS, believe it or not.

I use and recommend CachyOS. PikaOS is cool too. So try either of those. I hear good things about Fedora as well. Whatever you do, use something with the KDE desktop environment. It’s the best.

I couldn’t get the fucking thing to launch. It kept failing during setup with a silent error. I was really excited to try it. Damn shame.

I understand and respect that. In that case X11 is kind of dated. I believe Wayland on Mint is in a pretty good state now. Are you able to select a Wayland session on the lock screen? A Wayland session might bypass this issue altogether.

How committed are you to Mint? I generally have fewer issues with CachyOS and other Arch based distros. Fedora, and Debian are also worth checking out. As for the desktop environment; KDE is definitely worth trying.

I use ZFS on my desktop actually. I find it’s kind of annoying to setup, but once that’s done it’s way easier to manage. The best part for me is not having to play around with my fstab file like I’d have to with btrfs. I think ZFS is more resiliant anyway.
