Programming@programming.dev•Self-documenting code: if the comment is doing the explaining, the code isn't
2·4 hours agoYup, and the people that submit these PRs are outsourcing their work to you and getting away with it

Technology@lemmy.world•RAM to see 'meaningful price increases' before 2026 is out, as the memory crisis is predicted to last 'at least' another 3 yearsEnglish
30·5 hours agoEveryone knows except the people who are investing billions of dollars into AI and their press.
A lot of them do know and are planning to be the ones not left with the bag
All this, combined with all these people thinking the promise of being able to make a killer app being democratized being delusional. All we’ve actually seen is existing software getting worse and nothing important having emerged from this brave new vibe-world

Programming@programming.dev•Self-documenting code: if the comment is doing the explaining, the code isn't
223·1 day agoWhen I was a newbie, the “self documenting code” screed made sense to me, but with experience I’ve come to learn the type of person that is likely to latch onto it and advocate for it writes the least maintainable code.
Don’t make 80 character function names or change to structure of code to something worse to try to make it self documenting. Don’t write comments that are already obvious from the code. Don’t be shy about writing comments otherwise. Do update comments and ask people to update comments in PR feedback.
Most of all, fuck writing less maintainable code to try to satisfy LLM agents.
I don’t know how anyone can trust brave after the shit they pulled. They told us who they are. Believe them.

I didn’t say AI is going to go away. I said there are many unscrupulous investors that are trying to game the system to take money from suckers knowing full well there is a crash coming and planning to pull out at the top.
