2·2 days agoI used to have the same for the dishwasher, but then I got one that opens its door automatically at the end of the cycle, so human intervention was less necessary. And I’ve got a timer that shuts off power to my “smart” tv after 30 minutes of inactivity because fuck letting it use 25W continuously.

2·2 days agoBTW I don’t have a smart washing machine but I do have home automation through Home Assistant and I’ve added an automation that tells me when the washing machine has finished, how long it took and how much energy it used. It’s very useful to me, also because it sets a periodic reminder to unload the washing machine. Just by using a zigbee smart outlet.
well, just get the ai to read it!

2·2 days agoStuff like eWon routers are everywhere, they’re basically openvpn (thank you open source devs, of course we won’t contribute shit or share any of the money you made us) devices that connect to a bunch of central servers and allow you to tunnel to them. Compromise such a system and you’re spoiled for choice on what to hit.

2·2 days agoIt’s fucking stupid, you don’t use the manufacturer’s systems for that, or you’ll need one system for the fridges, one for the ovens, one for the lighting… You’re supposed to connect them all to YOUR control system, over isolated VLAN/LANs and then secure your system only.

2·2 days agoThere’s nothing as far as I know, even in industrial settings. Some companies are better than others, and some fields are better than others, but at the low level everyone does whatever the fuck they want. Always-connected teleservice routers and similar devices are everywhere, with outdated firmwares just waiting to be hacked. It’s improving but very slowly.
What do you mean? If it’s open source, it’ll be clear what it’s doing with your information
I think with frontier models you have to resist the temptation of letting them do too much. If you can, they can be great tools.
Eh let them be the alpha testers… Maybe in 5 years and a bajillion tokens it will be a real office suite

This. Have it explain and cite sources. Tools have uses, but you must know how to use them.
