This is actually the answer. Zuck, Musk, Pichai, Nadella, Altman, and Amodei all likely understand that AI is not inevitably going to fulfill what they’re promising, but they can’t risk not being in control of a system that could be a single endpoint for nearly all wealth acquisition in the future.
This is all just billionaire FOMO playing out at that scale.

I think they were pretty sure that’s what was going to happen, but they had to invent the bomb before anyone else in order to have a deterrent.
