When I was in high school, my math teacher had a strict no texting policy. This was in the flip phone era.

There was one girl who was always rude and disruptive, and would openly text in front of the teacher and curse him out if he commented. He told her if she did it again then he would toss her phone out the window.

She promptly pulled out her RAZR flip phone and started texting, and he grabbed it and tossed it out the window. She had to go and find it after class. 🤣

She did get back at him later in the year though, when he was checking a message from his wife and she called it out. He then tossed his own phone out the window.

My school did this 20 years ago. It’s wild that they let kids have their phones in class in the first place.

I have/had ADHD and when they allowed phones/pdas with notes and reminder apps for the first time, i finally started remembering what was assigned for homework. paper planners simply didn’t work for me.

So you get a permissions slip to say you can use one.

They cause far more upset and disturbance both in lessons and at break/lunch to allow their unregulated use.

The fallout for fights staged for snapchat is far more time consumng for staff than administering/policing special cases.

i agree about phones being a terrible idea to allow in schools in (current year).

But also you know teachers are just going to say “no” to a student asking for a permissions slip. Some of my teachers were not lax about phone usage, and those tended to be the classes where I consistently forgot what homework was due. Partial exceptions are only partially useful.

schools in my area already do this without any major issue. Kids put them in their locker when they arrive. If anyone is caught with one it is taken and the parents need to come to get it

My kid’s school has banned them. They must be kept in lockers or left at home. Mostly a good thing, but there’s been some issues with it in practice.

The school still has phone numbers. If there’s an emergency, those phones should be used.

I fail to see the need for a phone inside the school.

It would be beter to educate then ban outright IMO. If you ban the device outright kids will be sneaky about it. When I was still in school we hat smartphones and used it from time to time. Great tool for meeting with friends from other classes. Sending a message to your parents you can leave early or something. Outright banning phones is IMO stupid and only makes the problem worse. We should teach kids to be responsible instead.
