An impressive effort has been made to replicate the exact appearance of old CRT televisions on modern LCD and OLED panels. The page I’ve linked is very well written.

As a 90s kid it’s pretty funny to see, we were so impressed with every new increase in graphic fidelity in games and TV. The idea of deliberately trying to replicate a CRT nowadays tickles me

Because playing games designed on CRTs on a modern TV and at modern resolutions is an objective visual downgrade in almost every single case, except for a tiny select few cases.

Ii don’t think it’s replicating it for the shake of it. It’s more, kind of, to experience pixel art closer to the way it was designed.

It depends. Graphics weren’t spiky pixels as you can recall. That produced a far softer image, aside from scanlines and all the other stuff.

By now I can hardly play retro games from that time without shader, since the impression is auch a difference.

And I always was a pc player (from 8086/8088 on) and my consoles from mega drive on always used scart.

      Still.

Oh I love the nostalgia of it all of course. But we couldn’t wait to get rid of CRTs at the time is all. Such is life

I remember throwing out a Sony trinitron with my Dad when we got our first LCD. The thing must have weighed 80kg. It sat on the verge for God knows how long before it disappeared.

This would have been about 20 years ago. What a mistake.

Then again… I remember my folks throwing out or donating my old computers (C64, Amiga 1000, 500, 600). War crimes, I sez.

For me it was the fact that I couldn’t use my tv as a computer monitor, I retired my crt as soon as I could use an lcdfor both vga and tv. The monitor looked worse on most thing but had crystal clear text.

I keep harping on this, but this is a massive regret - sure they were bulky and power hungry, but I would sell a kidney (not necessarily mine) to be able to buy a modern CRT to enjoy my old PS1 light gun games (Pount Blank, Ghoul Panic, Rescue Shot, Time Crisis etc.) again.

This is why I have a CRT with a rasberrypi hooked up to it. Much easier than trying to find the perfect filters.
