I think SpiceDAO struggled with this, but that’s not “a soul” lol. They bought some rare Dune book or something thinking it gave them rights to it? I don’t remember the specifics.
Pointing to a group of plainly delusional idiots is technically a counterexample.

Digital book markets are why I will never fully switch from physical books. I prefer to own my shit and give it away if I want, can’t do that with an ebook or a downloaded game.
I don’t know how to do that. Liked I’m glad the tech exists, but I don’t have the motivation to learn how to do that or start a server, I just want to read 😅 I just go to the library or one of the many independent bookstores close to me.
Source: I run a Calibre-Web server for myself, my family, and my friends. All of my books are 100% DRM-free, and my devices sync directly to the server so I can download them natively just like if I had purchased them from the ereader’s official store.
Typical fediverse user in that sense. It’s not exactly surprising, a self hostable social media does seem to have a lot of people who believe self hosting things is trivial.
Yeah, it’s not the first time I’ve received a reply like that, but that was a thousand times better than the last one.
Last time it was my comment on why I hadn’t made the switch to Linux, I couldn’t get wow to work so I went back to windows (I know, windows bad). I get a reply basically calling me an idiot and saying even his tech illiterate mother got it working on Linux, like I didn’t spend a full day trying.
But yeah, this person was significantly more respectful and I appreciated their response. Carl seems like good people.
I don’t even meet in person, I just drop a box of books off at my library or thrift store. That’s typically where I buy/borrow my books from, so it’s not out of the way. Unless it’s one I think a friend would like, then I save it for the next hangout.
Thanks, unfortunately, I don’t know how to set up a web server to do that. But I do have my local library, which I go to at least once a week, they have Blu-ray Discs too. I also prefer to donate the books I buy because it makes me feel like my money gets more value if someone else enjoys it.
And nobody struggles with this for books. Not one soul.

Not true, I’m sure they are working on making it all digital and just letting us rent them. Nothing is sacred. Who is going to stop them?
Are you unaware of digital book markets?

I just strip DRM the second I download the ebook using calibre. Sharing becomes as trivial as attaching to a message.

Fair!
I just struggle to use physical books 😅
I totally get it! I’m just happy people read any which way they can! Reading is great exercise for the brain.
You can very easily do that with ebooks.

Goes on talking about web servers
Comparing to walking up to someone and handing them an object…

Or literally sending the 1MB file over some chat app And then dragging the file into the e-reader Easier than meeting in person

This is what I was thinking my self. Pretty easy to just send the file to a friend/family.
I just found their comment hilarious.
Well you don’t have to host it, theres also just a desktop program where you drop your files.

I am glad that technology exists though!
