Not a contrarian take, happy that worked for and to hear your success story.
Who initiated the conversation with recruiter? you or them?
Linkedin never worked for me, not in the beginning in my career, not 10 years later but maybe I was using it wrong (first job was some random job board, 2nd was cold emailing a CTO, …)
Always the recruiter initiating. As anyone working in IT, I get multiple messages a week, one in ten are relevant and one in ten of those are interesting, but I’m not jumping jobs every year, so it works in the end.
Its really just have a complete profile, listing keyword technologies. In the meantime I have a few recommendations but I don’t think those make a difference.
How long has it been since you were recruited? I avoid LinkedIn, but I’ve never needed to look for work because my dad knew a guy and I proved competent when that got my foot in the door.
Still, from what I have heard in the last year or so it has become, at least in part, a cesspool of scams and disingenuous employers wasting your time in their search for cheaper labor… both often powered by LLMs.
First one more than a decade ago, second one about 7 years ago, definitely pre-LLM era.
I still receive messages regularly and I don’t notice any difference from messages on the past. I answer one every now and then and it’s usually a real person. Maybe they are using LLM, but before that they just copy pasted a template and changed you name…
Are you telling me that a human sending form messages is in any way comparable to an LLM sending messages?
What matters is that humans used to be involved. Now they just review the results at some point. You are evaluated, chosen, further evaluated, informed, and given answers to questions you might have about a job and the company offering it all by the LLM. Everything that might theoretically be handled by agents saves the company money and let’s them cast a wider net.
Then you’ll be end up working as a reverse centaur for some rich kid’s startup. Sure, you can spend exponentially more time than the company does verifying things or ignoring, filtering through junk… but if you are desperate, unemployed, hopeful…

Theoretically, at least.
A human sending copy-pasted generic messages and an LLM sending copy-pasted messages? Yeah, I don’t care.
Fortunately, linkedin unsolicited messages cost money, so there is no mass-spam, it’s in their own interest to keep it plausibly relevant.
